In EYFS the teachers build in short adult-led focussed inputs. Opportunities to practise new learning and skills through play are encouraged in the different areas of provision. The children also have regular opportunities to practise their counting and to revisit prior learning.
EYFS Curriculum Overview
Maths in Year 1
As children make their first steps into learning about mathematics, one of the key aims for year 1 is to help them become confident when identifying and representing numbers.
Pupils might sometimes see maths concepts as too difficult to understand. That’s why it’s important to build a strong foundation, which will help them perform better in the following school years.
The curriculum also aims to make sure children become fluent in the fundamental maths areas of study. This will be supported by consistent practice, so that pupils can develop their reasoning skills, too.
Amongst the variety of skills developed through studying maths, problem-solving is a crucial one. The curriculum encourages pupils to solve a wide range of mathematical problems. This is great because problem-solving is not just a key skill for maths – it’s a skill for life.
